Chronic arthritic joints (rheumatoid) and their pains are signals of water deficiency in the affected joint cartilage surfaces. Normally, the cartilage that covers the surface of the bones in joint cavities receives water and nutrients through the bone. In dehydration, the bone marrow takes priority over the cartilage for the water that goes through the bone structure. Under such circumstances, the water requirements of the cartilage have to be satisfied from the vessels that feed the capsule of the joint. The nerve-regulated shunting mechanisms and the increased circulation and swelling of the joint capsule produce the pain. 

The local pain is a primary indication that the painful joints are not fully prepared to endure pressure until they are fully hydrated. The arthritis pain also indicates that the pressure-bearing and normally well-lubricated gliding properties of the cartilage contact points are decreased because of lack of sufficient hydration. 

Water held in the cartilage of a joint is the lubricant that protects the contact surfaces of the joint. Proper cushioning only happens when there is sufficient water in all of the tissues surrounding a joint. Otherwise unnecessary grinding and wearing happens which takes the body time to repair. Dr Batmanghelidj’s books go on to explain in detail how long standing, low grade dehydration plays a fundamental role in the presence of other ailments such as High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Chronic Fatigue and Depression, Diabetes, Heart Disease and Stroke.

One element that Dr. Batmanghelidj doesn’t cover, is the acidic state the body goes into as it metabolizes the typical North American meal. Body acidity causes what is called silent inflammation. In other word, you don’t realize it’s happening until years later when it starts to rise up into radar range and you then notice it as symptoms.

There are many ways to address body acidity, where it finds its favorite spot in your muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons. First, you can change your water, from chlorinated tap water and acidic bottled water to Cerra alkaline, ionized water. You can gradually add a few tablespoons of greens powder to your diet. You can start juicing vegetables to start off your day. You can add many more vegetables to your diet and cut your animal protein intake.
Look after yourself. Do your research. Only you can change your inner terrain. You need to alkalize and you need to hydrate your body by changing your diet and drinking half your body weight in ounces of clean, alkaline water. You will be surprised what will disappear.
